About Your Masterclass Leader

Educational researcher Dr. Sugata Mitra’s “Hole in the Wall” experiments have shown that, in the absence of supervision or formal teaching, children can teach themselves and each other, if they’re motivated by curiosity and peer interest.

In 1999, Mitra and his colleagues dug a hole in a wall bordering an urban slum in New Delhi, installed an Internet-connected PC, and left it there (with a hidden camera filming the area). What they saw was kids from the slum playing around with the computer and in the process learning how to use it and how to go online, and then teaching each other.

The "Hole in the Wall" project demonstrates that, even in the absence of any direct input from a teacher, an environment that stimulates curiosity can cause learning through self-instruction and peer-shared knowledge. Mitra, a professor of educational technology at Newcastle University (UK), calls it "minimally invasive education."

At TED2013, Sugata Mitra made a bold TED Prize wish: Help me build a place where children can explore and learn on their own -- and teach one another -- using resources from the worldwide cloud.

About the Masterclass

Why do we have computers in schools? Is it to improve instruction by 0.2% or to change the world? Is incrementalism the enemy of progress?

As Papert taught us, "It is fine to worry about what you are going to teach Monday as long as what you plan to do Monday points in the direction of a coherent vision of what you hope to do someday." This spirited Masterclass will challenge assumptions, offer an expanded appreciation of viable alternatives to the status quo and help school leaders clarify an informed vision for successfully leading their institution into the future. An expanded appreciation for how computing can truly transform learning helps help prepare school leaders to navigate the next "education revolution"

This Masterclass will explore the following topics through minds-on experiences and authentic case studies.

How the computationally-rich technologies of the maker movement may be used to affect real educational progress
Super-charging project-based learning
Using computers to maximise student agency
Why are we arguing about personal computing in school?
How modern knowledge construction is inseparable from computing
Honoring learning with head, heart, and hands equally
Creativity is inadequate without policies and practices that nurture the development of greatness
Moving beyond design to action
Elevating the expertise and professionalism of teachers
Constructionism as the key to future school viability
Designing schools to prepare children to solve problems their teachers never anticipated

Since 1997 Conrad has also been strategic director of the worldwide group and initiates and directs their business, marketing, design and a variety of strategic technical projects---everything from the CDF Player concept to webMathematica (which underlies Wolfram|Alpha) to conceptualizing wolfram.com. In doing this Conrad has formed new concepts of management including early use of website design to define strategy, "strategic bundles" and industry solutions sites as a way to verticalize activities.

A key part of his work has been understanding the underlying scope of our technology and communicating what we have, which he does do in his talks, sometimes in blogs and often in directing Wolfram Research's initiatives and their messages.

Conrad is interested in how technology and computation can move our lives and economies forward and in turn how this affects education. In particular Conrad realised that the school subject of maths has become almost totally discrepant from its real-world application and in 2010 founded computerbasedmath.org to address this worldwide.
Conrad has an MA from Cambridge University, UK where he reads physics and mathematics.

For fun, he takes photos and play the piano.

Whatever your area of expertise, exhibiting at EduTECH will put YOU face to face with the people you want to speak to…

Reasons to exhibit & sponsor

1. EduTECH 2014 features EIGHT co-located conferences, meaning that you gain the benefits of a niche event aimed at your target market, PLUS you get the quantity of visitors that only a large-scale event like EduTECH can attract.

2. Meet school leadership teams across 4 congresses for K-12 education: K-12 Ed Leaders Congress, K-12 IT Directors & Managers Congress, K-12 Business Managers & Administrators Congress and K-12 Library Managers Congress

3. Meet higher ed & tertiary leadership teams across 3 post-school congresses: Higher Ed Leaders Congress, Tertiary Tech Leaders Congress, VET Leaders Congress and Workplace Learning Congress

4. Meet Training & Development Managers and eLearning Managers at the Workplace Learning Congress

5. Grab the opportunity to piggy-back off our enormous, year-round marketing campaign – the organiser of EduTECH - Association and Communications Events – also organises several other spin off events throughout the year, and therefore own and manage THE largest and most accurate database of education professionals in Australia, segmented by interest, responsibility, geography, buying power, etc. Many of these people have also filled out surveys about their buying habits, including whether they are buying decision makers or key influencers. These lists and this information is ONLY available to our key sponsors.

6. Generate targeted sales leads and build your sales pipeline.

7. Reinforce your brand and remain top-of-mind with your existing clients and future prospects.

8. Launch a new product.

9. Showcase a new technology.

10. Drive more traffic to your stand by hosting a seminar or participating in the very popular ‘Win a Car’ passport competition.

What did previous sponsors think?

"At Microsoft, we consider EduTECH to be the most influential and important Education & Technology event in Australia. We're proud that our partnership with EduTECH allows us to further support education in Australia"
- Richard Ryan, Innovative Schools Program Manager, Microsoft

"Netbox Blue provides internet security and management solutions to schools, so an event like EduTECH is a must attend event because many of our customers and prospects attend each year." "Netbox Blue ran several successful workshops at EduTECH that were 'standing-room only' - these enabled us to present our solution to 80 or so prospects at a time. The feedback and questions from these sessions was extremely useful."
- Peter Geale, Global Marketing Manager, Netbox Blue

"EduTECH was a fantastic event for us. It was very well organised, and allowed us to engage hundreds of potential customers interested in our solutions. It's the only event we do that offers us the chance to meet entire school leadership teams in one place"
- John Walker, Marketing Manager, Anittel

Benefits of sponsoring

Meet and network with 5,000+ attendees from across 8 co-located events - all focused on the practical use of technology in education

Choose from a range of sponsorship opportunities across any or all of the conferences - You choose what suits you best, then deliver your message directly to a pre-qualified audience, looking for solutions and partners

Launch new products or services - this combined exhibition offers the ideal launch pad for new developments, products and services in front of the leaders in education technology from across the ANZ region

Brand visibility through our multi-channel marketing campaign - get exposure all year round through print advertising, mail, telemarketing, email, web and social media activities

Demonstrate your expertise by aligning yourself with one of the 8 conferences

Engage all the decision makers at once – with the different conferences all designed to appeal to decision makers and key influencers, everybody that you need to speak with to win business will be at the show at the same time
