About Your Masterclass Leader
Educational researcher Dr. Sugata Mitra’s “Hole in the Wall” experiments have shown that, in the absence of supervision or formal teaching, children can teach themselves and each other, if they’re motivated by curiosity and peer interest.
In 1999, Mitra and his colleagues dug a hole in a wall bordering an urban slum in New Delhi, installed an Internet-connected PC, and left it there (with a hidden camera filming the area). What they saw was kids from the slum playing around with the computer and in the process learning how to use it and how to go online, and then teaching each other.
The "Hole in the Wall" project demonstrates that, even in the absence of any direct input from a teacher, an environment that stimulates curiosity can cause learning through self-instruction and peer-shared knowledge. Mitra, a professor of educational technology at Newcastle University (UK), calls it "minimally invasive education."
At TED2013, Sugata Mitra made a bold TED Prize wish: Help me build a place where children can explore and learn on their own -- and teach one another -- using resources from the worldwide cloud.

Ewan McIntosh Founder & CEO NoTosh Ewan McIntosh is the founder of NoTosh Limited, an Edinburgh-based company with a global reputation for researching and delivering new learning opportunities for some of the world's top creative companies and school districts.
Ewan is also advisor on the digital agenda to the Vice President of the European Commission, Mrs Neelie Kroes, and sits on the ICT Excellence Expert Group advising the Cabinet Minister for Education in Scotland.
McIntosh's company, NoTosh Limited, develops products and services with creative companies on the one hand, and then takes the processes, attitudes and research gained there to the world of education. The company works with hundreds of schools and districts, providing ideas, inspiration and research on how to better engage kids.
Ewan was a French and German High School teacher, before moving from the classroom into technology research and leadership as Scotland's first National Advisor on Learning and Technology Futures. He later helped set up one of the most ambitious investment funds from a public service broadcaster in the UK, the $100m 4iP Fund from Channel 4 Television.

Gary Stager, an internationally recognized educator, speaker and consultant, is the Executive Director of The Constructivist Consortium. Since 1982, Gary has helped learners of all ages on six continents embrace the power of computers as intellectual laboratories and vehicles for self-expression. He led professional development in the world's first laptop schools (1990), has designed online graduate school programs since the mid-90s, was a collaborator in the MIT Media Lab's Future of Learning Group and a member of the One Laptop Per Child Foundation's Learning Team.
In 1999, Converge Magazine named Gary a "shaper of our future and inventor of our destiny." The National School Boards Association recognized Dr. Stager with the distinction of "20 Leaders to Watch" in 2007. The June 2010 issue of Tech & Learning Magazine named Gary Stager as "one of today's leaders who are changing the landscape of edtech through innovation and leadership." CUE presented Gary with its 2012 Technology in Learning Leadership Award.
Dr. Stager is also a contributor to The Huffington Post and a Senior S.T.E.M. and Education Consultant to leading school architecture firm, Fielding Nair International. Gary also works with teachers and students as S.T.E.M. Director at The Oaks School in Hollywood, California.

Alan November is an international leader in education technology. He began his career as an oceanography teacher and dorm counselor at an island reform school for boys in Boston Harbor. While Alan was a computer science teacher in Lexington, MA, he was probably the first teacher in the world to have a student project on line in 1984, a database for the handicapped. He has been director of an alternative high school, computer coordinator, technology consultant and university lecturer. He has helped schools, governments and industry leaders improve the quality of education through technology.
Audiences enjoy Alan’s humor and wit as he pushes the boundaries of how to improve teaching and learning. His areas of expertise include planning across curriculum, staff development, new school design, community building and leadership development. He has delivered keynotes and workshops in all fifty states, across Canada and throughout the UK, Europe, Asia and Central America.
Alan was named one of the nation’s fifteen most influential thinkers of the decade by Technology and Learning Magazine. In 2001, he was listed one of eight educators to provide leadership into the future by the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse. In 2007 he was selected to speak at the Cisco Public Services Summit during the Nobel Prize Festivities in Stockholm, Sweden. His writing includes numerous articles and two best-selling books, Empowering Students with Technology and Web Literacy for Educators. Alan was co-founder of the Stanford Institute for Educational Leadership Through Technology and is most proud of being selected as one of the original five national Christa McAuliffe Educators.

Joyce is currently the teacher librarian at Springfield Township High School (PA). She joins the faculty of Rutgers University School of Communication & Information in January 2014.
For ten years, Joyce was the techlife@school columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer. She is the author of Power Tools, Power Research Tools and Power Tools Recharged for ALA Editions. Her NeverendingSearch Blog (on the SLJ website) won an Edublogs Award for 2005 and 2009.
Joyce was awarded an AASL/Highsmith research grant in 2005. Her Twitter chat, #tlchat won an Edublogs Award in 2011.
Joyce is a Milken Educator and an American Memory Fellow. She was selected as a Technology and Learning 100@30 and was awarded an Edublogs Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.
Her Virtual Library won the IASL School Library Web Page of the Year Award for 2001. She has won her state's PSLA Outstanding Program (2005) and Outstanding Contributor (2009) Awards. Joyce is active in ALA, AASL, YALSA, and ISTE. She contributes to VOYA, Technology and Learning, and School Library Journal.

Neil Ballantyne is the Director of Learning Designs a New Zealand based company offering research, development and consultancy services for professionals working in human services education.
For over twenty years Neil has contributed to the promotion of engaging, innovative, and evidence-based learning for human service professionals. He has worked on initiatives to embed learning in the workplace, and designed blended learning programmes for professionals working in youth development, alcohol and drug services, and social work.

About your masterclass leader:
Conrad is the younger Wolfram of Wolfram Research - the organisation responsible for Wolfram|Alpha, Demonstrations and the core underlying technology. Conrad founded the European Wolfram Research in 1991 after his brother Stephen set up the headquarters in the US. Conrad continues to be its CEO.
Since 1997 Conrad has also been strategic director of the worldwide group and initiates and directs their business, marketing, design and a variety of strategic technical projects---everything from the CDF Player concept to webMathematica (which underlies Wolfram|Alpha) to conceptualizing wolfram.com. In doing this Conrad has formed new concepts of management including early use of website design to define strategy, "strategic bundles" and industry solutions sites as a way to verticalize activities.
A key part of his work has been understanding the underlying scope of our technology and communicating what we have, which he does do in his talks, sometimes in blogs and often in directing Wolfram Research's initiatives and their messages.
Conrad is interested in how technology and computation can move our lives and economies forward and in turn how this affects education. In particular Conrad realised that the school subject of maths has become almost totally discrepant from its real-world application and in 2010 founded computerbasedmath.org to address this worldwide.
Conrad has an MA from Cambridge University, UK where he reads physics and mathematics.
